Marlinde von Ruhs (1924–2021) was a distinguished Austrian-born visual artist and painter who made Guadalajara her home during the last three decades of her life, maintaining a prolific and consistent career rooted in Expressionism and figurative art. Her international training included studies at the Düsseldorf School of Art, the Vienna School of Art, and, most notably, under the direct mentorship of Oskar Kokoschka at the Schule des Sehens (School of Seeing) in Salzburg. She later continued her studies at the Art Students League in New York and at the University of California, Berkeley. Her work is characterized by an instinctive use of color and a combination of techniques, with oil on canvas, acrylic, watercolor, and applications of gold and silver leaf being predominant. Her work consistently revolves around three major themes: the untamed power of animals—particularly felines—the vitality of nature and flowers, and pure chromatic abstraction.
